The history of tourism
From Herodotos to Goethe and
Heine or Hesse, they all loved traveling. Back then, it wasn't what we call
tourism today. For example, Goethe's trip to Italy lasted for years and he
studied architecture, painting and sculpture and wrote down his impressions.
In French, this was called
"vacances" and concerned the time when the courts were closed. The
original meaning is actually "empty". The normal worker only had a
free afternoon, if any at all. After visiting the church on Sunday morning, a
small trip was often combined with a picnic (as can be seen in the paintings
of Manet, Monet and his friends).
In the middle of the 19th
century, some companies began to introduce a kind of factory vacation to
bridge the months when their products could not be sold and production was
therefore interrupted. This immediately saved wages as well. Later, these companies
organized one- or multi-day trips to the sea or the mountains for their workers
and employees. Then, smaller agencies specialized in these emerging services.
Counts, dukes, castle and country house owners who suffered from financial
problems opened their doors to paying visitors. That was the beginning of the
public museums.
Today there are package tours,
everything is included, you are shown "historical statues" especially
for tourists, with which you can have your picture taken. You can order your
Viennese schnitzel with German beer and feel at home, even the waiters speak German.
"The world is German," the German think, "why did Hitler want
to conquer it?" He only forgot the mosquitoes. They particularly like drinking German blood. “How good that there aren't that many at home. When can I
finally sleep in my own bed again?"
