death penalty

Hang him up! To the next tree! Some yelled and the stupid crowd followed.
Then, the priest came and stood on the pile of wood where the suspect was tied to a stake. Everyone fell silent and looked excitedly at the priest, who inquired about what was going on instead of pulling out the Bible and warning them that it was written in the holy script: "You shouldn't kill!" "He should throw the first stone that has not committed any sins!" or "Do you want to be just like common murderers?"
When the crowd noticed that the priest had no objections, but only claimed the right to take the last confession because he would later be paid for it by the congregation, they grew louder again.
The judge arrived. They calmed down again. Instead of telling the people what he should have known: According to Hume, the state and the law are a contract between the different members of a community, and these want to help with regulations and, where necessary, improve the behaviour of the perpetrators through appropriate punishment, but above all prevent irreversible damage, and death is final, he too didn’t dare to say anything, since he was paid by the people who wanted to lynch.
A third appeared. Supposedly the smartest of them all whom they chose to represent them. He was a learned and well-read person, had studied history. But did not dare to contradict the angry rabble because he knew that the majority is always right at first and does not want to be responsible for their misdeeds afterwards.
