from Germanic gods and nymphs to Christian heroes and
fountains of Mary
For the missionaries coming from Rome, it was almost an
impossible undertaking to make it clear to these “primitive” pagans in the
north that there should only be one God for all these natural phenomena. So
they took their imagination to their aid and, for example, turned a Wotan
into a Saint George who kills dragons, and out of the many water nymphs
simply Mary's wells, and later in the 16th century from the fir tree, the
symbol of fertility, a Christmas tree. According to the motto: We wisely
incorporate what we cannot eradicate.
