Cleopatra
She is said to have been very
beautiful and, according to Titus Livius (one of the first real historians living
at the time of the Emperor Augustus and having written “Ab condita urbe” -
since the city of Rome was founded), she had conquered the heart of the two most powerful
statesmen of the empire.
But who was she really?
The dynasty of Pharaohs in Egypt, who weren’t Egyptians
anymore but Greek, was in decline in the last centuries before our era and only city governors
of the Romans in Egypt. But even in these lower ranks, there were fights for
positions, even among siblings. Caesar was on a "round trip" when
this charming beauty caught his eye and he made her the governor over Egypt.
After the death of this dictator, she threw out her net again to catch one of
the Triumvirs (triumvirate - trinity of Antonius, Octavian, later emperor
Augustus and Lepidus) Antonius. Knowing, she wouldn’t have the opportunity of
living in splendor after his death in the realm of Augustus, she committed
suicide.
The first universities were founded
in the late Gothic and Renaissance periods, where of course all branches of
knowledge were taught in Latin. So people like Rembrandt and Shakespeare
learned in so-called Latin schools, preparatory schools (today perhaps a kind
high school) and read some stories from the work of the above-mentioned Titus
Livius (Cicero is a bit complicated but the works of Cesar and Titus are much
easier.). Shakespeare had copied and translated a lot anyway. Here he used
the story of Cleopatra. In the twentieth century, the whole thing was taken
up again in Hollywood, therefore, it is known to everyone today.
According to legend, she was a very
determined woman and might even have been happy about so much fame.
