Zarathustra
The Persian Wars at the beginning of the 5th century also
intensified a cultural exchange between these two parties. The Persians were
not barbarians, they had managed to unite the most diverse cultures and
religions from Asia Minor to the Indus. One of these philosophies or religions
was that of Zarathustra (Zoroaster in ancient Greek), which assumed that the
world consisted of two powers: a good and an evil one. Even the Chinese were
influenced by this and made it their "Yin and Yang". The impact on
the Greeks was particularly noticeable in their dramas (Iphigenia in Aulis).
In his play Euripides advocated that the gods, if they wanted to be such,
should not behave exactly like conventional earth inhabitants. For example,
how could a god claim human sacrifice? And exactly this idea of a good God
was then realized in the New Testament.
