The beautiful woman and her little
dog
In old French films, a pretty
woman often appears, of course not as lightly covered as it is today, but in
an expensive dress in bright colours with ruffles, meshes and other ribbons
that reaches to the floor and a large hat decorated with feathers or flowers.
The scene usually begins in the woman's dressing room. A gentleman in an
elegant suit sits in a comfortable armchair and discusses the last or next
opera performance with the woman sitting behind a paravan, or better, which
visitors were particularly spectacular, or which concubine (lady of the
world, actually an endured woman) is just financed by which, young aristocrat.
Every time the cord is threaded into the corset and tightened by her maid,
the beautiful woman is breathless for a moment, which gives the gentleman the
opportunity to also say something. Meanwhile, she puts make-up on her face,
unless she happens to have second maid for that too. A picture from the
Rococo: “The toilet of Venus”. At the end of the procedure she puts on her
big hat, under which her head seems to disappear, the parasol is handed to
her and of course, how could I have almost forgotten that, the dog.
A bloodthirsty animal the size of
a lap dog. A blue ribbon on his hair of the head indicates that this is a
male, a pinkish red ribbon for a female. This unpleasant fellow does not
bark, he yaps in a rather high-pitched, cutting voice and thereby draws
attention and gains space. His name is, of course, “Fou-Fou” (crazy-crazy).
And this angry dwarf has another function, he is jealous and reacts extremely
aggressively to everything that resembles to a grown-up man. Therefore, if the
woman wants to make the acquaintance of a man, she passes on her guardian to
her maid or friend.
He is bathed and powdered, goes to
the hairdresser, they cook for him and he is cared for when he is sick. How
good that he can't speak. What would he say? Maybe a lot of nonsense or a lot
of interesting stories?
Times and clothes have changed,
but the lap dog has remained the same.
