Future, present and past

"Here", asked the first rationally thinking person and pointed at the place where he was standing. "Here," replied his companion. "There" by pointing in the direction from which they had come. "There," came the prompt reply. "There" by pointing in the direction to go. "There," repeated the other. They looked at each other and saw a difference between one and the other "there".
It is difficult to retrace when the recognition became noticeable that this was not just a spatial but also a temporal difference. Then they began to tell each other about the past and the future. At first, the memory was probably limited. Dead group members were quickly forgotten. With inaccurate fractions of memory, they turned into gods, then were immortal. However, for most individuals there was only birth and death with life in between, generally only twenty to twenty-five summers at the most.
