Which direction is humanity going?
They had just climbed down from
the tree and were looking for edible roots, mushrooms and tubers with sticks
and sharp stones, and their stomachs could handle half-rotten carrion. There
had only been leaves, fruit and a few bugs on the trees. Suddenly a deafening
roar was heard, elsewhere a howl. Predators! They were feared and were considered
evil spirits to be appeased.
The field was cultivated and now
one waited for suitable weather. The Lord of Heaven over the sun, moon, and
lightning sent rain to fertilise mother earth and let the plants flourish.
Just as if the man fertilised his wife, from which children were born. Or the
calf that started giving milk when it was two years old. There was less fear
of predators now because walls were built and dogs kept to drive them away.
The god of heaven had a son, the high priest, the pharaoh, the king, the
strongest or the cleverest. Everything belonged to him and everything
depended on him. He waged war against other groups or settlements, or rather,
let others fight for him, made foreign tribes, who had been his brothers a
few generations before, his subjects.
Slowly the individual awoke,
realising that he himself was a god when the gods were behaving just like
humans. He made fun of himself and his fantasies. Everyone had the same
rights. Everyone? Only those who had already developed an awareness, or had
been brought up to do so, that was a minority. But it remained difficult to
find a replacement for God and King. Principles with which ego and other ego's
could go into a common direction. But there were only a few who, like
Socrates, would have drunk the cup of poison in defence of their own ego.
First, the question of the state
had to be resolved, the basic principles had to be carved in stone and the legal
status of ownership and property had to be regulated. The community turned
out to be too big, too many sold their votes for a little prosperity and
protection, not even security, but only relief. However, without own
thoughts, fewer new ideas arise. The strong hierarchy broke the idea of the
ego. The ego again subordinated itself to the “we”. The emperor replaced the
god again.
The descent in the Middle Ages
should lead to deeper darkness. Even art, the expression of the individual,
suffered a push back, in some cases it was, so to speak, forbidden. Bad and
good spirits, who were no less merciless than the bad ones, took hold of the
soul, another word for the human spirit or perhaps understanding. This world
was a valley of misery, real life had to begin after death.
People of other faiths oppressed
the country, so one had to learn and develop techniques. Knowledge wears down
faith. There were people who claimed that the earth was not a plate but a
sphere, the earth on which man lived was not the centre of the world. What a
presumption! Had the person whom God was said to have created in his image
found his unworthy place somewhere on the fringes of events? Doubt gnawed at
the belief in a higher power and made a freer understanding of the world, of
money, economy and development of trade possible.
The individual slowly moved back
into the limelight. It grew lighter around him, he opened his eyes and saw.
Should he trust what he saw or withdraw into his cave? He no longer only
wanted to be the product of creation, but to determine his own destiny. Ever
greater masses acquired knowledge. This was necessary because the upper
classes also recognised that the time for simple manual labour was over. If a
power wanted to remain at the top, it had to train its subjects to a certain
degree. With that, the power dug its own grave. This “elite” was still often
going to succeed in turning the common people against one another, with
nationalism, hatred against those who think or live differently. Two steps to
freedom was followed by one back. Any backward movement led to pogroms, the
Holocaust and war.
We are slowly moving forward.
Religion and other superstitions are losing their influence, offices are no
longer sold, but awarded with salaries based on earnings and training. One
can also come up from below, even if still with great difficulty, schools are
free or accessible to everyone. People living differently, such as
homosexuals, after they were initially punished with imprisonment or
sometimes even with death, or tortured with electric shocks or diagnosed as
sick, or labelled as having a genetic fault, can marry and adopt children in
many countries. Women, Asians and Africans are high-ranking politicians or
heads of state in the most important industrialised countries, even if some
would like to stop this development because they believe it will lead to the
destruction of tradition and culture.
And then, the Internet came, which
enabled knowledge to be disseminated even better. Lies are hard to hide.
At some point, the small man will
control the state and the upper classes, and no longer the other way around.
