Up and down

The small family business that he had taken over from his father was not going well and so he was very happy to have received an invitation from the mayor to have dinner on a small luxury ship. It was clear to him that this was not because of his "beautiful blue eyes"; new business connections were to be made. When you get to know the right people, you become more competitive. And now, he was preparing for this evening.
The mayor was not exactly a pleasant person because he had to kiss a lot of feet on the way up and now expected this from everyone who wanted something from "his" cake. Our main character had seen the head of the city once before when a big boss from the state administration met him. "Of course, Mr. XY, it will be dealt with immediately, Mr. XY, without wanting to praise myself, I have already thought of it, Mr. XY, …………… .." Then he turned around and yelled at one of his subordinates. If he wanted something from a superior, he could be overly polite, but when he asked something from a subordinate, he was like Nero himself.
It was already two o'clock and he actually wanted to go to the hairdresser, and he also had to pick up his suit from the dry cleaner. Perhaps tonight, he would also be able to speak a few words with the mayor's daughter; after all, they had been to school together.
The evening came, he was at the jetty, but no one or no ship could be seen. "I might just have arrived too early." - he thought by himself. He looked at the clock. "Right, half an hour early." He waited. After two hours, there still was nothing. As he stood there, smoking one cigarette after the other, a black limousine slowly drove past him. The window was turned down a bit through which he could hear the laughter of a small company. He had been made fun of; that had been the water test. His phone rang, he took it out of his pocket, no number, he answered the call, a woman's voice, it was the mayor's daughter, she asked: "Are you coming to us for dinner tomorrow?" He hesitated a moment, then answered quickly: “Of course! At what time?"
On the way home, a few thoughts crossed his mind: Had he really sunk that low? What did he want and what could he achieve? He knew that people were laughing at him. The mayor knew now that he would be ready to kiss a lot of feet.
The next evening he went to the mayor's villa, which was a bit outside the city, with a high, opaque fence made of three meters of wall and a thick row of trees protruding beyond it. No light, he rang the bell again, waited a little. He was about to throw away the flowers he had bought for his former schoolmate when the little gate opened. There she stood with a disarming smile. He handed her the flowers, according to his memory these were her favourite orchids because she didn't like roses, too submissive, as she put it.
The paved path led to a magnificent, semi-circular staircase, he found the lion espalier a bit mawkish but expensive. Then it went on through a spacious vestibule, through a double door into the dining room. He could only see two place settings. She noticed his surprise, but put the flowers in a vase and pointed to a chair for him to sit down. His amazement grew even greater when she started talking about a big project rather than old school days or romantic things. She talked as if she had all the strings in hand. How much she had changed! When he looked at her even more closely, he could see hard features behind the make-up. He was not prepared for this negotiation, which was to take revenge later because there were some clauses in the contract that were to bind him and his family business closely to the mayor's business. As he would remember after years, she always gave him an innocent smile at the hot spots, then she caressed his arm. She played with him like the female spider that, after being mated, eats the male animal. After signing, she kissed him and lay in his arms.
When he woke up in that foreign bed the next morning, he found a small table with breakfast and a perfumed letter next to it. "Good morning darling! You know what we talked about!” He lay there for a moment, closed his eyes again. When he was at school, he had always dreamed of conquering her. She had given herself to him last night. She was good in bed, but something was missing. Calculation had taken the place of feeling. He felt a strange tension in the epigastric region, as if after an exam that he had absolutely no idea how it would turn out.
For the next few months he did his business, or rather, did his tasks. His bank account grew, but he was no longer the same. Sometimes they spent a night together. This was usually the reward for a deal. It was supposed to be a kind of crowning event, but by now he had learned to play his part. Every now and then it occurred to him that she might suspect he was no longer the same.
The mayor kept him and people like him at a certain level, but he was careful not to let them grow too much for his position. Our main character wasn't entirely sure whether he was the only one enjoying the daughter's sweet fruits. Because he was one of the most loyal servants, or perhaps best played his part, his business got bigger and the city smaller for him.
Years went by and the carefree indifference of the residents did not allow other parties or groups to build an effective opposition, so dark deals went undetected. In construction projects, for example, material was saved where it was not necessarily visible and charged again at other points. Accidents were not uncommon, but were mostly attributed to human error.
It was a fun game to see his account grow twice as fast. However, where should the money go? He was careful and didn't want it to stand out too much, even though the mayor's daughter kept encouraging him to finally behave according to his status. He slowly thawed, and after he had travelled enough, a good car was bought, the furnishings in his apartment were renovated, and the local tennis club attended. He was a sporty type and learned it quickly, soon became the best player because he did not put his wealth in his stomach, was successful and in demand.
The newcomers in the city were mostly from the poorer, eastern part of the country, foreigners were rare. He noticed a young girl. Or maybe she him? They got closer, met more often, a relationship began. The mayor's daughter became jealous and there were open arguments several times.
And then, there was a serious accident in the factory, toxic substances were released, several people had to be taken to hospital, the fish in the nearby river died. Environmentalist from all over the country came, organised demonstrations, the press besieged the house of the factory operator and the mayor's office. An independent, super regional commission was convened to investigate the events more closely.
These particular clauses in the treaties made our hero of the story appear to be an impostor and culprit. When he thought about it, the money he'd made with it had been pretty little in order to be blamed for the whole scandal. When the trial began, both the mayor's daughter and the pretty young girl dropped him like a hot potato. Heavily indebted, he lost the family business. In the end, he moved to another city. Not because he felt ashamed, but because he hoped to start over there.
And there he met the mayor's daughter, who had just been divorced. ………………………
